Reflective Narrative
1.1 Through my studies here at CSUMB I was able to further enhance my Japanese language skills through the courses I completed during my studies here, as well as abroad. Prior to coming to CSUMB I had taken three years of high school Japanese which gave me a basic knowledge of Japanese equivalent to Novice-High (3) according to the ACTFL guidelines. With the language courses I have taken here at CSUMB I was able to gain at least the Intermediate-High (6) according to ACTFL guidelines. I was able to achieve this through classwork and homework in classes like JAPN 301 such as pair conversations, grammar sheets, kanji quizzes, skits, and short presentations like this one. These various activities all factored into my ability to effectively communicate in the three modes of Japanese; interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational while being aware and using culturally appropriate manners. Furthermore I felt that my skills were tested and improved through the JAPN 303 Business Japanese class that I took which was taught completely in Japanese which covered a variety of difficult topics such as honorific speech. 1.2 While all the language class I took here at CSUMB has allowed me to compare, contrast, and analyze the difference between Japanese and English structural formats, the class I felt most help me gain a better understanding was the JAPN404 Advanced Japanese for Presentational Communication. Through this class we studied about various Japanese formats. Also this course, along with others, helped me to be able to write this essay Japanese for my capstone project.
